Permission Granted to Make Mistakes, Be Creative and Be Yourself
A lot of people have the misconception they need someone’s permission to be themselves, to follow their creativity and to make mistakes. They are afraid to be different, to make a mistakes or to laugh at themselves.
Now, I know you don’t really need permission from me or anyone else to be creative.
I have lived a long time as a creative person. I grew up being creative writing stories as soon as I knew how or sewing a dress for my first dance.
Like most, I do a constant battle with my inner critic. There are many times when I will hear my old professors saying the work I’m doing is less than my potential.
And even for a while I lost my creative freedom, thinking I needed someone to give me permission to create the way I wanted. Between ho-hum jobs, family, debts, and everyday chaos, it is hard to be creative.
But like many creative people, I persevered.
I have finally given myself permission to bring that creative person out of hiding from the world. She has since given herself permission to make mistakes, to follow her creative spirit and to actually be herself.
Don’t Deny Yourself and Others
By denying yourself the chance to create a meaningful story, have satisfying relationships, show your true self and live a fulfilled life. . . you are slowly hiding away. If you don’t grab the horns now, you might look back and wonder why and where your creative self disappeared to.
In this post by Marianne Mullen of AwakenCreativity.com she asks what you are waiting for? What is holding you back?
Are you afraid of making a mistake? You know, mistakes are really the building blocks to success.
Are you waiting, like me, for someone to say its okay for you to do things your way? To say it’s okay to be who you are? You are the one who gives yourself permission.

I love this article by David H. Lyman on Being Creative People:
He lists the behaviors of creative people. One that stands out to me is on being different.
• Creative people are different, and they do not mind being different. My mother would tell me as a child: “Yes, David you are different, but in being different, you are special.” She gave me permission to accept my “differentness”; that is the permission creative people need to give themselves. (It would helpful if those who love or work with creative people were to offer the same acceptance of this differentness.)
If you are having trouble finding your inner creative, this post by Annie of PajamaProductivity.com (love the name!) is a list of 101 Easy Breezy Ways to Get Your Creativity On.
I will be referring to this list often to keep my creativity on. I especially like number 99:
She’s right. Wallow in your self-doubt for a few minutes. Then just say, what’s the worst that could happen? and then let ’em go.
And if you want to take some time dig more deeply into getting permission, you might order some books from Amazon.com. I just ordered these. I can’t wait to get started reading them……
And if you think you do need permission here is a post recently put out by Seth Godin entitled you already have permission:
You have permission to create, to speak up, and stand up.
You have permission to be generous, to fail, and to be vulnerable.
You have permission to own your words, to matter and to help.
No need to wait.
You need to give yourself permission to be happy.
Give yourself permission to be creative.
Grant yourself permission to fail and make mistakes.
You can be a creative entrepreneur, an author and a life changer
Just give yourself permission to be great!
What do you give yourself permission to do:
Is it make a mistake? start something new?
Take a risk on something?
Enjoy life?
Bake a cake and fail?
Write a short story?
Write an epic post?
Have fun and laugh?
Believe in yourself and your dream?
